I think you've pegged it - narrowing the disconnect between the Jewish and secular worlds, i.e. being responsive to the needs of the community, is absolutley lacking. And, absolutely necessary!

This reminds me of a conversation I had today. I was talking to a 26-year-old who works for a Jewish foundation that funds many web ventures. Yet, the foundation is giving no concerted thought to what kind of technology might help achieve their mission and is taking a conservative approach to new technologies. I don't blame them, frankly. It's often smarter to see what's going to stick rather than throwing money at a new idea.

But when I asked this person what kinds of websites he uses in his work life, he mentioned a handful of news sites. When I asked him what he used in his personal life, YouTube.com and Facebook were at the top of the list.

The surprising thing to me wasn't that he's using community-building tools like YouTube and Facebook, but that there was no intersection between his personal and business web use.

It says to me there's a lack of a technical culture in many Jewish nonprofits. I think looking not only to outside consultants can help, but also looking to younger workers and what they do on a personal basis can help open possibilities.
